What is tile flooring?

Tile flooring is the term used to describe any hard-wearing flooring made up of tiles, where the gaps are filled with grout. Most tile flooring is made up of ceramic, a clay-based material. You will often hear these tiles called porcelain or non-porcelain, ( which is also known as, confusingly “ceramic”) which refers to a difference in composition.

In general porcelain tiles are more durable than non-porcelain and like ceramic tiles, they come in many varieties depending on the production process.

Pros of tile flooring

Long-lasting and durable, easy clean and hygienic.
  • Water resistant, as some floor tiles are glazed or coated with liquid glass, therefore spills are easy to wipe up leaving no visible sign of stain.
  • Low maintenance, no need to hire professional cleaners, and tiles do not wear out like some other floor coverings.
  • Endless design options, a wide variety of designs, colours and styles to suit individual tastes, and prices to suit any budget.

Cons of tile flooring

  • Can be expensive, based on the type of tile your choose.
  • Grout issues, if a grout sealer is not used to prevent dirt and stains from setting in the grout lines can become very dark over time and may require extra attention when cleaning.
  • Can be uncomfortable underfoot, hard and cold to walk on, also due to the hardness tiles can be a problem should someone fall.
