The Brief: Warm Minimalism

Namatjira Drive was all about finding the balance between architectural and liveable. The owners wanted that sharp, modern look but didn't want the house to feel cold or like a concrete box. We leant into a 'Coastal Organic' vibe, mixing clean white render with heavy stone masonry and warm timber to ground the whole thing.

The Materials: Stone, Wood & Shade

The hero of this build is definitely the stonework. We used those raw stone feature walls at the entrance to give the house some weight and a sense of permanence. To soften the lines, we used vertical timber cladding across the garage and entry, which creates a nice contrast against the white render.

• The Upper Canopy: Check out the timber-lined ceilings on the top floor. They wrap around to create a deep overhang, which isn't just for looks—it’s essential for shading the glass during a QLD summer.

• Privacy Screens: We installed custom vertical battens on the top level. They let the breeze pull through the bedrooms but stop people on the street from seeing in.

Key Features We’re Proud of:

• The Entrance: We went with floating stepping stones over the lawn leading to a massive timber-clad pivot door. It sets the tone for the rest of the house before you even step inside.

• Massive Cantilevers: The rear of the home has a huge upper-floor overhang that shelters the alfresco area. It means you can be out by the pool even if the weather turns.

• Waterfront Ready: Since it’s a Broadbeach canal block, we handled the seawall reinforcement and dropped in a custom pontoon so the boat was ready to go as soon as we handed over the keys.

The Strategy: Beating the Heat

A lot of people forget about orientation, but for this north-east aspect, we had to get the shading right. By using those deep eaves and the cantilevered floor, we’ve kept the main living zone naturally cool. You get the breeze off the canal without the house turning into an oven by 2:00 PM.
